Course Title: “Outliving our Dentistry”- Dementia & Oral Care 


Course Description: Explore the early signs of dementia -- and when to call the POA. Compare to manifestations of normal aging. Illuminate the bidirectional relationship between periodontal disease and Alzheimer's disease, including how proper oral hygiene may lessen Alzheimer's symptoms, as well as slow down the progress of this disease.


Course Objectives:

  1.  Identify and explore the challenges of aging.
  2.  Recognize the various types of dementia, how
    each type physically manifests, and the
    associated oral hygiene care challenges and oral
    health issues.
  3.  Discover the role that periodontitis plays in
    dementia's progression.
  4.  Develop enhanced communication techniques to
    increase patient cooperation.

Joy PoskozimSpeaker Bio: Dr. Joy Poskozim graduated from NYUCD in 1999 and completed a GPR at Woodhull Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY in 2000.  Dr. Poskozim is the dental director for several nursing care facilities as well as a house call dentist.  She has been in private practice for 20 yrs, practicing integrative health general dentistry at her office on the north west side of Chicago.  Dr Joy earned her fellowship with the Special Care Dentistry Association (Geriatric Council) in 2020, and recently her CDP (Certified Dental Practitioner).  A national speaker, she is an advocate for educating caregivers, home health and senior living communities on the importance of the continuity of oral care for the home-bound.
