My Life with Autism - A Parent’s Perspective & Journey

Course Description: In 2003, I graduated from dental school. In 2004, I became a father. In 2006, my son was diagnosed with autism and both my personal and professional life was changed forever. This class will cover the struggles and challenges parents face raising a child with autism and the challenges faced by dental professionals when treating patients with autism (and their parents). We will focus on treatment options and participants will get a better understanding of what autism is and how to best serve this growing patient population and their families.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will learn about autism, it’s prevalence, traits, and associated behaviors.
- Explore treatment options and therapies for individuals with autism that are holistic and prescriptive.
- Participants will learn behavior modification techniques and treatment options to reduce negative outcomes as well as home care strategies for parents.
- Discuss how to build a team approach with families using the power of encouragement and empathy.
