Quick Summary:  Opioid addiction.  Abuse of recreational drugs.  Teenage depression and suicide.  Mental health crises.  High divorce rate.  Is there an underlying factor contributing to these social catastrophes?  Much of it is how we and the patients for whom we care manage stress.

Course Description:  Living in today's world offers incredible access to knowledge and experiences, instantaneous contact with others, and an abundance of commentary on current events.  However, we are tasked with extraordinary levels of loneliness, relational distress, workplace dissatisfaction and mental health/addictive disorders that have caused our life expectancy to decline for the first time in non-wartimes.  This lecture will offer coping strategies and techniques to expand happiness and health which lead to prolonging life.

  1. Describe different perspectives and goals for understanding the etiology of stress.
  2. Analyze current levels of stress and generate opportunities to make changes to enhance health and wellness.
  3. Apply stress reduction strategies and gain skills to deploy techniques in the delivery of dental healthcare.
