Implant Therapy and the RDH
Under appropriate circumstances, implant therapy is a viable and predictable treatment modality. Hygienists advise and educate patients considering implant therapy to replace missing teeth as well as provide maintenance for previously placed implants. To better understand the overall process of implant dentistry, this course will discuss basics of surgical placement, site preparation, restoring with either fixed or removable prostheses, etiology of ailing/failing implants and implant maintenance. Treatment plan considerations of tooth retention versus implant placement as well as anatomical concerns and systemic factors will be reviewed.
Course Objectives:
· Understand indications for implant therapy and related anatomical concerns and systemic factors.
· Describe etiology, microbiology and clinical appearance of problematic implants.
· Learn techniques for implant maintenance by the RDH.
