Local Anesthetics: Dentistry's Most Important Drugs
Local anesthetics form the backbone of pain control techniques in dentistry. They also represent the safest and most effective drugs in all of medicine for the prevention and management of pain. In this course, Dr. Malamed will discuss the currently available anesthetic formulations in Canada and the United States, their clinical differences and the more common of the complications associated with their administration.
Specifically, attendees will have a better understanding of articaine HCI, the use of specific local anesthetics in improving the effectiveness of inferior alveolar nerve block, and the recently approved (by the FDA in the United States) local anesthetic reversal agent, phentolamine mesylate (OraVerse). Also being discussed is local anesthetic overdose (toxic reaction), THE most significant complication of local anesthetic administration in dentistry.
